Supreme Court Appoints Corruption Chiefs

Greek-courtGreece’s highest court has appointed two new financial prosecutors to replace the outgoing investors Spyros Mouzakitis and Grigoris Peponis who have been digging into a slew of scandals and produced cases against high-level former government officials.
Panayiotis Athanasiou, who has in the past investigated the Siemens cash-for-contracts scandal, will become the main financial prosecutor. Galinos Bris, who has been involved in probing former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, who is on trial on charges of money laundering and embezzlement, will be Athanasiou’s deputy.
Mouzakitis and Peponis said on May 10 they would be stepping down and handing over many of their duties to new “corruption prosecutors” but there was no elaboration why.  First Instance Court prosecutor Eleni Raikou took the post in Athens while appeals court prosecutor Argyris Dimopoulos was appointed in Thessaloniki. Their task is to probe public officials over the mismanagement of state funds.
