newego_LARGE_t_1101_53765782_type12128In the last years, the number of Greeks that commit suicide has risen dramatically. The suicide rate in Greece increased by 26.7 percent in 2011 compared to 2010. The number of suicides reported in 2011 is the highest in the last fifty years.
According to estimates of the non-governmental organization Klimaka based on data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), 477 were reported in Greece in 2011 (393 men and 84 women), presenting a rise of 104.8 percent among women.
The region with the highest suicide rate for 2011 was Attica, the prefecture that includes Athens, where 35 percent of the total number of suicides where reported. Central Macedonia follows with 53 suicides, Crete with 37, Western Greece with 36, while in Thessaly and Peloponnese 33 suicides have been reported.
Klimaka estimates that in fact the number of people taking their own lives in Greece is much larger than those reported, while there is no data on non-fatal suicide attempts, which is estimated to be 15 to 20 times more than the recorded suicides.
