Crete Hosts Talks On Ancient Novels

mithThe Department of Philology (Division of Classics) of the University of Crete in Greece is organizing the seventh Rethymnon International Conference on the Ancient Novel (RICAN) on May 27-28.
The conference includes four sessions and will be hosted in the Student Cultural Center Xenia in the city Rethymnon, Crete.
The topic of RICAN 7 is Slaves and Masters in the Ancient Novel. This is about characters of ancient novels, folk and Christian narratives, free, freedmen and slaves, as well as about the multidimensional power relations that are developed between them.
The speeches focus on the literary image of master and slave and the relevance between the novel and the ancient world’s social reality. They explore the various ways in which the dynamic of subordination and control are illustrated in literature from the Hellenistic period to late antiquity.
Academics from Universities and Colleges from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Belgium, the US, Paris, Switzerland and Greece will participate in the conference giving speeches.
RICAN is a biennial conference series devoted to the study of the ancient novel organized since 2001. It gives researchers from all around the world the opportunity to gather and share their common interest and knowledge about the ancient novel.
