Survey Says! Greeks Unhappy With EU

uoaGreek citizens tend to feel negative about the future within the European Union (EU), according to a nationwide survey presented by the University of Athens, conducted within a series of actions organized by the university aiming at supporting students during this period of economic crisis.
The interesting findings of the study were presented at a press conference given by the Dean of the University of Athens, Theodoros Pelegrinis, and some of them are even classified as unprecedented discoveries.
Particularly, 66.45% of the respondents answered negatively the question, “What do you think of the overall policy of the European Union during this period?” which reportedly startled the researchers from the polling agency Opinion Poll that collected the data. Overall, a percentage of 85.39% of the Greek citizens criticized the policies imposed on EU member states, with the young being more tolerant and the women participants more skeptical.
However, the university appears to be a true hope for the people of the country, since 83.99% of the sample believe that people of higher education should intervene in the crisis management. The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,011 people of all ages from May 22 to 24 by the polling company Opinion Poll. A percentage of 70.76 answered “no” when asked if they believed the EU would overcome its problems.
Zacharias Zoupis from the polling company noted that two out of three Greeks are afraid they may lose their job from one day to the other. In addition, one out of five people want to migrate, but cannot afford it (the percentages are above average younger and highly qualified people).

The dean of the University of Athens referred to the efforts made on behalf of the Greek institution to establish a university network in the southern Mediterranean countries to support the survival and welfare of the young people. As Pelegrinis pointed out, “Many young people in despair resort to our University seeking help and employment. Despite all the odds and negativity towards the universities, citizens in Greece generally respect the institution of the university and seek assistance from it, so that we feel obliged to respond to this social demand.”
