Increasing Attacks on Buses in Attica

bus_patrolLately, a series of attacks against bus drivers and passengers in Attica have been recorded, as well as vehicle damages. The bus drivers in Attica are afraid for their safety and their passengers’ too, and are asking for security measures to be taken.
The perpetrators are gang members, who often resort to vandalism and violence, especially at night and in areas such as Aspropyrgos, Menidi, Perama and Ano Liosia, all in the Attica prefecture. Attacks against foreign passengers by far-right gangs or individuals are also on the rise and are becoming more and more frequent.
OSY, the union representing bus drivers, has asked for police patrols to follow bus routes in order to avert attacks and give drivers and passengers a feeling of safety.
“Police patrols cannot possibly escort buses, but they do make sure to drive along the routes at regular intervals in order to provide some sense of security,” Nikos Kouloumbaritsis, a union representative for bus drivers said, according to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
The evening schedules of the local line 805 in Aspropyrgos in particular, are conducted only accompanied by a patrol car, as the safety of both drivers and passengers is a number one priority.
