Golden Dawn’s Festival Angers Kalamata

120613GreeceGoldenDawn_6296471A storm of protests has risen in Kalamata after Golden Dawn’s decision to organize a festival for its voters around Greece on August 4, the day  the dictator, Ioannis Metaxas, carried out his self-coup in 1936.
Municipal factions, Kalamata’s Anti-Fascism Movement, local organizations and unions are mobilized to prevent the festival from  taking place in their region.
“The decision has been taken by the state Port Fund for the organization of the festival in a place that belongs to it, and the decision was approved by the services of the decentralized administration. We are  now trying to put this space in the municipality’s jurisdiction,”  the Mayor of Kalamata, Panayotis Nikas said.
He stressed that, “In the summer we are excepting many visitors to come. Professionals and residents live with the worry of the revenues, due to the crisis. Political events that create tension and problems are not welcome and they will not be accepted, because in the summer we have to protect the calm of the city.”
The Network of Active Citizens of Kalamata underlined, “The holding of such a festival is an offense to the fact that Greeks were always against Fascism, Nazism, and the abolition of Democracy in our country.”
