Many Elementary School Vacancies in Crete

private schoolsVacancies in elementary schools on the island of Crete have been recorded in a letter sent by the Higher Regional Primary Education Service Council (APYSPE) of Crete to the Ministry of Education.
The official vacancies, as recorded by the Directorates of Education in Crete for the month of June are the following: Heraklion 124, Lasithi 28, Rethymnon 54 and Chania 52.
Vacancies in Special Needs Education are not recorded on official documents, but are more than 150. Only in Heraklion, there is a lack of 45 parallel support programs, 18 integration classes are closed, while there is need to create an additional number of 20. One school did not function at all and its students were transported on a daily basis by taxi to a relative school in Heraklion.
Unofficial vacancies are even more, while over 120 all-day sections in elementary schools and kindergartens in Crete did not open at all, or opened and closed, in 2013. Sections were reduced, while all-day sections that functioned were “ghosts of the past.”
