77-year-old Under House Arrest in Patras

plastairakleio_420_420With an unprecedented court decision, the members of the Council of Magistrates in Patras have decided instead of sending to prison a 77-year-old man, who was accused of owing money to the state, to keep him under house arrest as an alternative sentence to be served.
According to the newspaper ta Nea, it is the first time that such a decision has been issued, based on the lenient treatment of the defendant, who has been facing some serious health problems that apparently could not be dealt with in prison.
The 77-year-old was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for not having paid his debts to the Greek State as a former managing director of a company with financial backlog.
However, in case the defendant comes to a house arrest violation, he will then risk the opportunity given to him by the judges.
