Pelion First in Greek Tax Evasion

PILIO_452_355Greek tax officials, after making 841 inspections of tourist destinations, through the Financial Crime Prosecution Unit (SDOE) have found Pelion, at the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, to be the region with the worst offenses.
The checks took place in Santorini, Paros-Antiparos, Mykonos, Crete, Thasos, Corfu, Mitilini, Skiros, Chalkidiki, Platamonas, Rhodes, Loutraki, Kiparissia, Kalamata, Parga, Patra, Skopelos, Skiathos, Pelion.
From the 841 scrutinized, the owners of 381 enterprises. were found to be offenders although 822 were charged for not giving clients receipts, for failing to submit VAT refund, incomplete entries in hotel books, undeclared workers. Violations were discovered in various tourism destinations:
Pelion Beach: 83 percent
Corfu: 77.7 percent
Paros-Antiparos: 61.9 percent
Santorini: 60 percent
Euboea: 60 percent
Peloponnese: 46 percent
Mykonos: 42 percent
Sporades: 42 percent
Rhodes: 36 percent
Mytilini: 34 percent
Chalkidiki: 32 percent
Parga: 30 percent
Crete: 27 percent
Platamonas: 0 percent
According to SDOE announcement, the Financial Crime Prosecution Unit has prepared an operational plan for the summer season from July 1-Sept. 15 and will be going out to make spot checks again. There was no information on whether anyone was charged or will be prosecuted, although the statistics showed that the government isn’t meeting goals set by its international lenders to crack down on tax cheats, especially in the tourism industry, the country’s biggest revenue engine.
