Eurostat: Unemployment at 26,8% in March 2013

unemployment22Unemployment among the active population in Greece rose from 26,7 percent in February to 26,8 percent in March, according to data that Eurostat released on July 1.
According to community data, the median unemployment rate in the Eurozone ranged in May 2013 at 12,1 percent, noting a slight increase in relation to April (12 percent), while across the EU it remained steady at 10,9 percent.
Regarding Greece’s individual performances in March, the unemployment percentage for men was 24,1 percent, for women 30,4 percent and for young people under 25 years, 59,2 percent.
The average unemployment in the Eurozone in May was 12 percent for men, 12,2 percent for women and 23,8 percent for young people.
In May 2013, the EU had 26,4 million unemployed people, of which 19,2 million concerned the Eurozone. Within one year, that is in May 2013 in relation to the same month in 2012, unemployment increased by 1,34 million individuals in the Eurozone and by 1,32 million in the EU.
The countries where the biggest increase of unemployment was recorded within a year was Cyprus (from 11,4 percent to 16,3 percent), Greece (from 22,2 percent to 26,8 percent) and Slovenia (from 8,6 percent to 11,2 percent).
In May 2013, the number of the unemployed under 25 across the EU reached 5,5 million, of which 3,53 million individuals concerned the Eurozone’s countries. Within a year, unemployed people of this category increased by 60,000 in the Eurozone and by 77,000 in the EU.
