Crisis Spikes Diseases, Killing Greeks

gGreece’s crushing economic crisis, which has pushed 20 percent of the population in to poverty and left many of the rest trying to survive after pay cuts, tax hikes and slashed pensions, is having more dangerous side effects too: it’s killing people.
A survey by the National School of Public Health showed an occurrence of severe and chronic diseases is in high levels in the population of our country as people neglect their health, unable to pay for insurance or medical costs, and with the government literally abandoning people to die in some cases.
Chronic diseases have shown a spike, with the survey finding that some, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and mental illness are the largest cause of disability and premature death and eventually bring high costs to the health system since they account for 70% of demand for health and absorb more than 65% of national health expenditure.
The research dealt with the level of the income, the health status, access and use of health services and drug selection. Here are some of the findings of the study:
-A reduction by €530 in monthly family income, which amounts to €1,115. Eight out of 10 patients perceive this decline as particularly high and declare very pessimistic about the future while 2 out of 10 reduced their healthcare costs.
– Four in 10 patients recognize the generic medicines as safe and quality medicines while the country of origin is a key factor in the recognition that a generic maintain safety standards and can be effective.
-The drug for chronic patient is a slippery slope, reducing any possible cost to access the medication. Nine out of 10 consider the drug as particularly important to maintain the level of health while 6 out of 10 consider the opinion of the physician the first criterion for changing drug.
-Just one in 10 changed his medication and chose the one compensated by the social insurance.
