Greek Scientific Publications Gain Notice

allScience is one of Greece’s strongest fields and publications about it are picking up international popularity.
The number of the Greek scientific publications increased from 1996 until 2009 at a pace faster than other other counties of the European Union and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
That stopped in 2010, as the Greek economic crisis began, the National Documentation Centre reported.  According to latest data for the year 2010, Greece accounts for only 2.4 percent the of EU’s scientific publications and just 0.85 percent of the OECD’s.
But as far as the number of references is concerned, which indicates the impact that the scientific publications have, Greece presents also bigger number compared to the average number of OECD member-states during the whole period 2006 to 2010.
Greek publications received an average of 4.98 references, surpassing the OECD average (4.79), while in EU the average of references per publication was 5.52. The years 1996 to 2000 the average of references to the Greek publications was only 2.45.
The rest of the indicators concerning the impact of the Greek scientists and the recognition of their scientific work by the international community appear also to be improved. In the years 2006-2010, the percentage of publications which included references to Greek articles and reached 65.6 percent.
