The team also included Spyros Yianniotis, Antonis Fokaidis and Kalliopi Araouzou, who finished second to Germany, at 54:03.3, a little more than a minute slower than the winners.
Just two-tenths of a second back after the Greek team was Brazil. Poliana Okimoto Cintra, the winner of the women’s 10km race was teamed with Allan Do Carmo and Samuel De Bona and the trio swam well enough to earn a bronze medal. Australia was fourth, Italy finished fifth and the USA, the reigning champions from the last competition in Shanghai, placed sixth.
The team from Germany was fueled by Gianniotis’ long-time rival, 33-year-old Thomas Lurz, who captured the gold medal at the 5km Team event. Isabelle Harle and Christian Reichert were part of the gold medal winning German team which finished in 52:54.9.
