The Paleontology Award Greece-Netherlands was given to Geology-Biology Professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Evangelia Tsoukala, and Dutch paleontologist, Dick Mol, for their important work and discoveries, as announced by the Greek Secretariat of the International Giuseppe Sciacca Awards.
The awards constitute one of the biggest treasures on a worldwide basis and are devoted to the memory of a 26-year-old architecture student, who died in 1986 when his parachute failed to open as he was taking part in a religious ceremony it Italy. He was regarded as a model of ethos and contribution to the society.
The awards’ aim is to spread civilization and social contribution, friendship among nations, human values and cooperation between young people. Tsoukala is renowned for her teaching, writing and research work, having the study of Vertebrate Paleontology as her main object.
The discovery of the biggest tusk led to the award of Prize Guinness in 2009 to Tsoukala and Mol and was published in 2011. In 1998, Tsoukala created the first Paleontological Report, which was established as Municipal Museum of Natural History of Milia, Grevena, in 2003.
Mol was one of the pioneers in discoveries in Milia and said the experience helped him at the scientific representation of the mastodon in Milia and at the discovery’s propagation. He has voluntarily offered all of his knowledge for the creation of three museums in North Greece (Siatista-Kilkis-Thessaloniki).
