Turkish Jets Invade Greek Airspace Again

f16During a three-month moratorium in the Aegean Sea, the Turkish Air Force avoided sending fighter jets into Greek air space as it does at will, but they returned on July 31 when enemy aircraft flew over Greek islands at the height of tourist season.
Six Turkish fighter jets, four F-4’s and two F-16’s remained in the Athens FIR for 21 minutes, violated the Greek airspace and operated a low level flight over the islets Makronisi and Anthropophagi near Fourni of the Greek island Ikaria.
According to an announcement made by the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, the Turkish aircraft entered at 11:02 the Athens FIR between Samos and Chios, conducted at 11:19 a flight above Makronisi and Anthropophagi of Fourni group of islands, at an altitude of 3.000 and 5.000 respectively.”
The Hellenic National Defense General Staff says that “the total of the Turkish jets were intercepted and identified with the international rules and by standard practice,” which means that the Turkish jets were tracked by Greek pilots but there was no attempt at intercepting them. It’s common for Turkish jets to fly into Greek airspace.
