Cretans are not going on vacation this year. The reduction in wages and income will keep a lot of people home, while the best plans include a weekend of camping at the south part of the island for those who love nature or otherwise a visit to a friend’s house in the countryside.
A trip away from the island of Crete is an impossible dream as ticket prices have gone up and even a visit to one of the closer islands is not possible.
For those who have been more harshly struck by the crisis, even a trip around their own region is a luxury because of the increasing price of petrol.
So, most Cretans are restricted to day trips to the nearby beaches of Crete with the summer going by at an urban rather than a holiday pace.
