Three New Outbreaks of West Nile Virus

3DDD81F96DBD7D54CF1F87252781D4B4According to data of the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (HCDCP) another three outbreaks of the West Nile Virus appeared on August 6. One of them appeared in the region of Xanthi, a fact that accentuates the concern about a rapid spread of the virus.
This summer, there are already 17 outbreaks in Greece, 12 of which appeared in eastern Attica, four in Macedonia and one  in the region of Thrace.
The West Nile Virus first appeared in Greece in 2010, causing the death of 30 people, mostly elderly with chronic diseases. Nine deaths in patients over 65 years old with underlying diseases were recorded in 2011, while in 2012, eighteen elderly people with health problems died.
