Samaras in Washington, Kerry First Meet

Samaras_USABeginning an eight-day visit to the United States, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will start on Aug. 7 with a meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry, a day before sitting down with President Barack Obama to talk about Greece’s crushing economic crisis and foreign policy issues.
The meeting with Kerry is expected to be focused on bilateral issues, as well as the general situation in the southeast of Europe and the Middle East, given the escalating developments in Syria and Egypt. The long-running dilemma of Cyprus reunification is also on the table as Greece is seen as a power broker in helping trying to find a solution. Samaras spoke with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades just before leaving Athens.
In New York,  Samaras will meet with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Archbishop Dimitrios, representative of Greek diasporic communities, as well as the UN’s General Secretary Ban Ki-moon. The Prime Minister will also visit the 9/11 Memorial and the New York Times editorial board.
In Washington,  Samaras will attend a function of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and visit the editorial offices of the Washington Post.
The other main topics of discussion with Obama will be the economy and energy, considering the developments in the southeast of Europe. The Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew, National Security Adviser Susan Rice and Deputy to the President Caroline Atkinson will be present in the discussion.
