Merkel: We Need to Give Greece a Little Time

Angela MerkelSpeaking in Berlin after returning from a two-week vacation German Chancellor Angela Merkel rebuffed questions about additional assistance for Greece. Instead, she pointed to “positive elements” as the euro economy begins a turnaround.
“We need to give Greece a little time so that things can develop a bit,” Merkel said.
According to Bloomberg, the chancellor also defended Germany’s commitment to European solidarity. Still, she said, a third Merkel government will pursue the same crisis-resolution course as it has so far.
“I will ensure that solidarity also leads to results,” Merkel said. “It makes no sense if structurally nothing changes.
Angela Merkel also blasted tax increases as “poison” as she waded into the German election campaign vowing to remain in office for the full four-year legislative period if she wins a third term.
She cited “very clear” differences with the opposition Social Democrats over taxes, which SPD chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrueck has pledged to raise.
Polls show Angela Merkel, Germany΄s chancellor, has the upper hand. Her Christian Democratic bloc led the SPD by 13 percentage points, remaining at 39 percent in a weekly INSA poll published yesterday.
“I can point to many controversies” between the main parties, Merkel said yesterday in Berlin during a panel interview for Phoenix Television. Merkel embarks on a 56-city tour of Germany today before elections on Sept. 22.
