What Is It Like to Be Greek?

keep-calm-and-go-greek-23Over the last few years, so many controversial things have been heard of poverty-stricken Greece since the economic crisis broke out. Rise in the unemployment rate, in social inequalities as the rich got somehow richer and the poor poorer. Greece has been several times hit by the media, being characterized as the country of shadow economy and tax evasion. But there are two sides to every coin. I bet you don’t know what being Greek is really about!  So let’s see…
We like being Greek:
Because we have a small, poor country full of big-hearted people.
Because we never pay a visit empty handed.
Because there is no way to explain to foreigners what the word “kapsoura” really means (burning desire for someone).
Because there is a Greek in every corner of this planet.
Because “filotimo” (friend of honor, helping someone because it is a shame not to) does not exist in any other language in the world.
Because Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were Greek.
Because we invented the theater.
Because we gave birth to Democracy.
Because we are proud of our culture, not of our wars.
Because when we were building the Parthenon, others were still sleeping in trees.
Because we distinguish between Eros (falling in love) and Agapi (innocent love).
Because Eros was a Greek God.
Because “Greeks do not fight as heroes, heroes fight like Greeks” (Winston Churchill, 1941).
Because we are not ashamed to burst into tears.
Because we dance when we feel blue.
Because 97% of the stars are named after Greek words.
Because our parents do not forget our existence when we stop being teenagers.
Because we face every difficulty with humor.
Because the Olympic Games were born in Greece.
Because our sky is blue, not grey.
Because 40% of the Oxford dictionary is made up with Greek words.
Because we know what “Kefi” (propensity to fun) means.
Because Homer wrote Iliad 3,500 years ago and Hollywood turned it into a movie just recently.

  1. Alex:
What do you want to do with FYROM? Invade them?
They are a bunch of provincial types, loud mouths with no knowledge of history sort of Balkan Talibans.
Why do you feel threatened by such people? I find them entertaining and deeply ignorant.

  2. FYROM will not go away if we pretend not to notice. Looking the other way is what cowards do.

Now that the Skopians “human rights” apologists lost every last shred of moral credibility by looking the other way as they turn into “ancient Macedonians”… our long term goal should be to delete FYROM state. Help Albanians annex west and Bulgarians the East in exchange for public statements and written agreements acknowledging macedonia as part of Greek cultural patrimony. (and that neither country will name any region in their country “macedonia”)

The Skopians can go back to being Bulgarians. Albanians live with their fellow Albaniansa and this issue closed once and for all. Without this, the political instability this issue generates in the Balkans will continue indefinitely.

  3. Yes but you forget that Skopia is totally depended on us. Unless we agree they can’t join NATO or the EU. So they need us more than we need them.
The behavior you find so irritating is actually a sign of weakness. It shows that they have no leverage. So they bark.
When they are ready to make a decision they know where they can find us.

  4. You don’t get it. The SKopians are not alone. They are being backed by other countries. The only reason why we continue to have the NATO/EU veto is because the US and other EU countries don’t want to get rid of it for themselves. Not only couldn’t they give a damn about Greeks but they actively colluded with Skopians trying to ethnically erase us.

  5. Alex, this is a low return proposition. You want too much attention on an area of very low return which draws resources from elsewhere.
The pressure on Skopia comes from the international community and the EU.

  6. Not true. The international community betrayed us and called the Skopians macedonians. They look the other way as the skopians try to usurp our identity to hide their shame.

The attempted genocide of greeks by IMRO and their apologists is not a trivial issue.

  7. Germany at least doesn’t call FYROM officially “Macedonia”. Perhaps that’s why you are so angry at the Germans?

It seems very important for you to trivialize the Skopians attempts to delete the Greek people yet again.

  8. If you knew the history you’d know many Greeks have died at the hands of IMRO. More will die again if we don’t take actions to defend ourselves.

  9. Germany is biggest economy in Europe thus the biggest trading partner for virtually every EU state. It has nothing to do with FYROM issue. (other than the fact the Germans look the other way like everyone else does)

  10. If you are Greek as you claim you need to decide whose side you are on. You spend entirely too much time trying to trivialize Skopian issue (much like the Skopians do)

  11. No. I can give exactly what Germany trades with whom. And FYROM is a non-EU country. And they happen to buy a lot from us. So, I don’t get your alarmist behavior. It’s like you want to kill trade and harm Greece.

  12. I am pro-business so arguing I am against trade is red herring that has nothing to do with Skopian issue..

Its more like you sound like the Skopians that troll this website trying to trivialize the Skopian issue.

What part of these people want to commit GENOCIDE against the Greek people don’t you understand?

  13. I am on the side of Greece. And I see you without understanding what you are doing to do harm by killing Greek trade for your personal entertainment.

  14. You just said they are not a threat to the Greek Army. So how are they going to commit genocide and when?

  15. You make no logical sense. You agree the Turks are trying to destabize greek by support FYROM being called Macedonia… then you seem to be arguing we should be calling FYROM Macedonia?

The more effort you expend defending Skopian/Turkish positions on this name issue, the less and less you come off as Greek.

  16. Alex: You are speaking to a SuperGreek. 🙂
Now let me ask again: what practical thing do you want to about FYROM which happens to trade with us and buying Greek products the most?

  17. Your harming Greek trade by going on and one about our biggest trading partner no? ( the Germans). Is that your way of trying to try and convince us you are “greek”?

You are the one harming Greece by seemingly telling us to recognize Skopians trying to commit GENOCIDE against the Greek people. Given Skopian false flags troll this website trying to trick Greek posters and your persistence on this issue, I am having serious doubts you are Greek.

Even in the off chance you are Greek as you claim, you clearly have no clue that the Skopians and their apologists are trying to ethnically delete Greeks.

  18. Greeks don’t tell Greeks to trivialize the issue of Skopians propagandists trying to annex 1/3 of our country and ethnically delete Greeks. This is not a minor issue. Your repeated attempts to trivialize the issue is how Skopians threatening our country argue.

  19. As I said, the more you keep defending the Skopians, the less believable you are as Greek. At minimum you come off as a coward afraid to defend his country with every word you say in defense of the Skopians and their apologists.

  20. The Skopians also have military and logisitical support from country’s much bigger than Greece. (the Turks.. who fully the Skopians in name isssue)

They are also e trying to delete our identity by controlling history. (trying to deligimize as “real” Greeks in the international community).

  21. There was no europe without greece. Richest country in Europe with history and culture and the most beautiful, funny thing europeans fuel there imperialist ideals because they think their some how related to the greeks yet they spit on todays greeks

  22. Greeks love there european brothers???? Since when? Europe has spat on greece since byzantine era. The only brothers we have are our orthodox brothers in the balkans.

  23. Sorry guys, I happen to work with Greeks, Brits and Americans in academia–all cohesive nice folks.

Falerakimark’s comment, “. . .far too many Greeks will criticize others for what they also practice themselves,” is a pretty common observation by anyone living and working here. It’s not necessarily racist. I’ve heard many Greeks make that comment about themselves in an honest moment. Maturity is a wonderful thing.

Gotta be more than 1% of Greeks would agree, MSMlies.

  24. Amen, Dean. Your humanity and levity shines through the daily caca here.

“A great man never looses his child’s heart.”

  25. Think he’s talk’in about me guys? You all know I’m a card-carrying Skopian. Hee hee. Alex don’t ever leave us.

  26. Now there’s a healthy attitude. Suppose we could make some bumper stickers with that sentiment? Then drive around Paris, and Rome with them?

  27. Hey its the bigot Tonto-ski that pretends not to notice the former Yugoslavians ethnic transformation into ancient macedonians, their blatantly obvious irredentism, and their endless hate speech towards Greeks.

‘We do not claim to be descendants of Alexander the Great.’ – FYROM’S Ambassador Ljubica Acevshka,
speech to US representatives, Washington DC, January 22 1999

‘We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are a Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian.’ – FYROM´s Ambassador to Canada Gyordan

  29. Perhaps we should make some bumper stickers that say “united Macedonia”.. .like you the former Yugoslavians you support? You know the ones you pretend not to notice changing into “ancient macedonians” and openly encouraging irredentism against soverign state Greece?

  30. You are a bigot. The facts speak for themselvs.

You endless rant “racism” towards Greeks… then stay dead silent when racism is directed at Greeks (like the poster above) You even play stupid as the former Yugoslavians turn into “ancient Macedonians” and openly encourage irredentism on state sponsered level.

    You are a BIGOT.

  31. Paranoia is a pernicious little seed. It grows and grows until one day it blossoms. Ecce Homo [L.]: Alex

  32. You are racist.

You endlessly manipulatively rant about “hitler” and “racism” towards Greeks… then stay dead silent when racism is directed AT Greeks (like the poster above and the endless array of racist ultra nationalists that come here to make endless racist statements)

You even play stupid as the former Yugoslavians turn into “ancient Macedonians” and openly encourage irredentism on state sponsered level.

    You are a BIGOT.

  33. Oopss… no one supports you but communists, Skopians, , and foreign nationalists that are racist towards greeks.

  34. You are full of BS. You are a non-Greek that is racist towards Greeks. You just manipulate words like racism and human rights.

No one can find your posts when countless extremists here come ranting racist crap against Greek.
