Thessaloniki’s Atatürk Museum Reopens

200px-Ataturk-birth-houseWith the backing of Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, the Kemal Ataturk Museum has been inaugurated after its restoration in Thessaloniki and stands as a monument to the man under whose authority Turkey defeated Greece 89 years ago and drove it out of Smyrni. Boutaris said the historic significance of Ataturk should be remembered.

The house is the birthplace of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who was born there in 1881. It is a three-floor house with a courtyard on 24 Apostolou Pavlou Street, next to the Turkish Consulate.

Before the Greek army won back Thessaloniki, the area was known as the Koca Kasım Paşa district, Islahhane Street.. It was built before 1870 and in 1935 the Thessaloniki City Council gave it to the Turkish State, which decided to convert it into a museum dedicated to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

The building has three floors and a courtyard. It was repaired in 1981 and was repainted to its original pink. Most of the furniture is authentic. Any missing items were replaced with furniture from Kemal’s mausoleum and from Topkapi in Istanbul. There are photographs on all the walls of Kemal at various periods of his life.

There are four rooms on the ground floor, none of them of much interest to visitors. On the 1st floor is the reception room, with European sofas, a large console table, and a chased brazier; a large sitting-room, with low banquettes around the walls; Kemal’s mother’s room, with a bed, a banquette, and a trunk; and the kitchen, equipped with contemporary cooking utensils.

The most impressive room on the 2nd floor is the one in which Kemal was born, a large room with a banquette, his desk, and a large brazier. It faces another room, in which some of Kemal’s personal effects from Ankara are displayed. These include formal dress, smoking requisites, cutlery, cups, and other items. All the documents relating to Kemal’s schooldays have been hung on the walls. A pomegranate tree planted by Kemal’s father still grows in the courtyard.

  1. Turkey is built upon the genocide of the INDIGENOUS Greek civilization of Asia Minor which had existed for millennia before the Asiatic Turkic tribes emerged from the depths of Central Asia and destroyed this indigenous Greek civilization, it’s remnants being completely swept away by the Asiatic Turkish barbarians in 1922.
However the Hellenic people have won partial freedom, liberating ar least the territory of modern day Greece from the Islamic Turkish hordes. From here the struggle will continue until ALL of the territory of the indigenous Hellenic civilization of Asia Minor is liberated and the Asiatic Turkish peoples are driven out of the region back to Central Asia from where they originated. Todays Golden Dawn movement in Greece has this as their ultimate mission. They will succeed. A New Hellenic Golden Age approaches, like a phoenix rising out of the ashes!

  2. The Greek presence in Asia Minor has been dated to at least the time of Homer around 800 BCE.
The geographer Strabo referred to Smyrna as the first Greek city in Asia Minor. Greeks referred to the Black Sea as the “Pontos Euxinos” or “hospitable sea” and starting in the eighth century BCE they began navigating its shores and settling along its coast.
The most notable Greek cities of the Black Sea were Trebizond, Sampsounta, Sinopeand Heraclea Pontica.

  3. Both my grandmothers had to flee Pontus. I was fortunate enough to have spoken to them about their experiences before they passed away. The hostility towards Turks still lives within me. Never forgive, never forget.

  4. Nonsesne. The Turk still denies all genocides to this day, including the massive Armenian genocide. All this talk about getting along is nonsense and is not going to happen till the Turkish mentality changes and I don’t see it happening.

  5. Go f-ck yourself “observer”. You showed your true colours when you pretended not to notice the former Yugoslavians turning into “ancient Macedonians” and constant insinuations my soverign country is “Greek occupied Macedonia”. (exactly as Greece warned would happen years ago but was mocked by pretentious greek hating bigots like you)

You are what’s known in the biz as an ethnic cleanser.
