A big fire that broke out in the afternoon of Aug. 17 in the region of Kouroupata on Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, was said to be contained by firefighters. It was burning near villages but it didn’t threaten houses.
Many units of the Fire Brigade are still operating in the region in order to put the fire under control.
On another island, Thasos, firefighters there pushed back a conflagration with the help of the Greek Army and other units. Fire Brigade units were still on the island in order to deal with potential revivals of the fire.
