Thessaloniki Municipality Bank Accounts Blocked

boutaris_GiannisHalf of the bank accounts of the Municipality of Thessaloniki have been blocked by a legislative act by the Greek Ministry of Finance, because the municipality has not given stamp duty to the tax office for 17 consecutive years.
The height of the debt reaches €1,2 million and concerns the period from 1993 until 2010.
As it was made known, the command was given by the fourth local tax office of Thessaloniki (D’ DOY) “as an act of assuring the public interest.” A tax audit has preceded, during which it was proved that the municipality had not paid stamp duties for rentals it receives.
Talking to the Athens News Agency, Thessaloniki Deputy Mayor and treasurer Giorgos Arvanitis, denounced the incident that for a debt of €1,2 million, accounts of €12,5 million have been blocked.
“We asked for an extension to August 27 to file our objections,” Arvanitis said.
Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris will meet with the General Secretary of Revenue, Charis Theocharis, in Athens, where he will attempt to have the blocking lifted.
Arvanitis assured that the municipal employees will be paid as normal, despite the problem.
