Monks Charged With VAT Violations

epanosifis_556_420The Financial Crime Prosecution Unit has pressed charges against the Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios Epanosifi for allegedly compiling bogus invoices of 270,000 euros related to a European program which the monastery joined in 2009 including works apparently not completed.
According to cretalive.gr, investigators uncovered the wrongdoing and are compiling a report to determine what kind of fines the monastery officials should face.
People familiar with the case told dogma.gr that the case relates to Valued Added Tax (VAT) which the monastery was supposed to pay to contractors but allegedly didn’t.
Monks said the works were not completed as they should have been and that they will be vindicated by the courts. They denied any wrongdoing.
