One member of a family of police officers or firefighters who died in the line of duty will be given priority for hiring and applying through the civil service, under a decree signed by Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The decree was drafted by the Greek Ministry of Public Order and presented to Mitsotakis by his counterpart Nikos Dendias.
According to Dendias, 24 applications have been made from 2006 to the present for a job with the Greek Police by members of the families of officers who died while on the job.
“Despite the limited resources we have to make hirings in the public sector, we thought it our duty to satisfy the long-overdue demands of the families of police officers and firefighters who fell in the line of duty for one of their members to be appointed,” Mitsotakis said after signing the decree.
“This decision was our duty and our moral obligation toward those who sacrificed their lives in the service of the community of the citizens,” he said.
