Greece’s Cost of Syria Intervention

SyriaGreek diplomacy is still holding a wait-and-see attitude toward Washington’s stance on Syria. That is why the Foreign Ministry is not willing to take the risk of making a prediction of the development of the Syrian crisis.
So far, the Greek side has clearly shown its opposition toward a possible US-led military intervention in Syria. Within the framework of the 27-nation bloc’s foreign ministers’ September 7 meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos called for a united European stance on Syria.
However, the crisis escalation in Syria, creates several problems for the Greek government. One of them is the issue of facilities the US may ask for, if necessary, and are expected to be provided by the Greek side according to international obligations and transatlantic agreements. This will cause political controversy with the Greek Leftist parties, which stand against the facilities provision as well as the use of the American bases.
There is also great possibility that other countries of particular importance to Greece, such as Turkey and Israel are involved in the Syria issue, something that may affect the Greek Prime Minister’s visit agenda.
Finally, a possible U.S. military intervention in Syria is very likely to create a new wave of refugees and illegal immigrants from the countries of the region, while Greek authorities are also concerned about the possibility of a terrorist attack.
