Greek Births Fall 10% in 5 Years

The data which was sent to the Greek Parliament by the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, shows that in 2007 the number of births was 111,926 and fell over the years to 100,980.
“The problem of low fertility among the Greek population is continuously increasing over the last two decades and has significantly been deteriorating in the past year because of the profound economic crisis which affects the country,” the Minister of Health noted in his letter to the Parliament.
According to statistics recording childbirths by the Institute of Child Health, there has been a 10% decrease in the number of births over the last five years, particularly in 2007 ( 111,926 ) ; in 2008 ( 118,302 ) ; in 2009 (117.933) ; in   2010 (114.766) ; in 2011 (107.200) and in 2012 ( 100,980 ) .
Georgiadis also said that, “The policies to decrease the low birthrate in Greece require systematic measures and the development of actions for benefits, infrastructure, service organization, etc., to economic and social dimensions.”
