Home Arrest Planned For Greek Convicts

vouli (2)_533_355A bill to let some Greek convicts serve out the rest of their sentences at home, under electronic surveillance, has been submitted to the Parliament as a way to relieve overcrowding in prisons.
The bill provides the sentence to be served at home with electronic surveillance of the prisoner, under the condition that 2/5 of the sentence has been served, while as far as life imprisonment is concerned, at least 14 years have been served. In case that the detainee is serving multiple sentences, the minimum imprisonment in penitentiary institution is 17 years.
Convicted of felonies particularly heinous and harmful to the public safety are excluded. Drug trafficking, high treason, conspiracy and terrorist activity, rape, abuse to lechery, pederasty, child pornography as a profession or a habit, child prostitution, armed robbery and voluntary manslaughter are among those felonies.
The bill would allow private companies to bid on providing the electronic surveillance to lessen the chances of escape.
