Russia’s Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko is scheduled to visit Athens on Sept. 16 to meet a number of political and business leaders, including Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
Meetings are also set with the President of Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis, Opposition leader Alexis Tsipras of SYRIZA, Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, Archbishop Ieronymos and a number of business representatives, including the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Athens.
The purpose is to discuss a series of bilateral issues in order to expand the transnational relations of the two countries and develop inter-regional co-operation.
The discussions will mostly focus on trade and investments, particularly in the energy and transport sectors. Current affairs such as the Syrian conflict and the upcoming Greek presidency of the EU in the first semester of 2014 will also be discussed.
Matviyenko will attend the Third Greek-Russian Social Forum in Zappeio and go to meet Greek lawmakers where she will be awarded with the Gold Medal of Greek Parliament in a special ceremony.
