Greek Skyros Island Eyes Waterway for Seaplanes

idroplano_NafplioThe port authority of Skyros, the southernmost of the Greek Sporades islands, recently held meetings with companies that responded to a tender for the construction and operation of a waterway at the island’s port, as Greek Travel Pages (GTP) website reported.
The waterway on Skyros is seen as a profitable investment that would benefit the local community through the connection of the island with other destinations.
“The prospect of Skyros becoming a hub of a waterway connection network for other destinations would bring significant benefits to our island and boost the region’s development,” said the port authority’s president, Kyriakos Antonopoulos.
Greek company Hellenic Seaplanes was among companies that expressed an interest and presented its proposal to the port authority.
According to the proposal, the company would carry out procedures for the licensing of the waterway and cover all construction and operation costs.
The waterway would be ready for seaplane flights by February 2014.
Hellenic Seaplanes aims to connect all Greek islands through a seaplane network and create 100 waterways in Greece by the end of 2013 and another 100 in 2014.
