Greece’s lingering economic crisis is making Greeks cut back on medicines as well as other necessities, with 33 percent saying they’ve curbed how much they take because they can’t afford it, according to a survey that also showed60% believe their health is suffering.
The survey which was carried out by Kapa Research for the National School of Public Health and whose findings were released on Oct. 3 found that 28.4 percent of Greeks admitted to “spacing out” their consumption of drugs for their ailments to ensure the medicine lasts longer. Half said they are having trouble affording medicine.
The survey participants were also asked over the main fears and insecurities related to the crisis. A rate of 90% said that the key fear related to the crisis is the lack of justice while 80% named unemployment, poverty and sickness. The negative consequences of the financial crisis have also caused an increase in mental illness and suicides.
While Greece has a Socialist medical care system it isn’t universal and people who can’t afford to pay for doctors and medicine are left to fend for themselves. Or not.
