A crowd gathered outside the tavern of the Kosmas family, which was filled with policemen, court bailiffs and representatives of the Monastery of Great Lavra on Mount Athos.
The tension on the island of Skopelos, in the western Aegean Sea, Greece, has intensified, particularly exploding at the beach of Glisterio. Representatives of the Monastery of Great Lavra arrived on the island accompanied by policemen, in order to take the estate, belonging to the family of Kosmas, for more than one hundred years.
Policemen of MAT (Units for the Reinstatement of Order), who arrived hooded and holding guns, blocked the surrounding roads and invaded the property of the family. They handcuffed two of the family’s children who did not resist.
Mrs Kosmas, owner of the tavern, felt sick and lost consciousness, a fact that did not seem to move the monks and the police. Residents of the island had flooded the surrounding streets tooting their horns and yelling at the invaders to go away.
The strange thing in this case, is that the representatives of the monastery had also tried to implement a court decision in their favor in the past, but when they arrived at the post bordering the estate, the basis of which they had won the trial were not found. Apparently the court decision at the time was based on not existing borders and false designs.
For this reason, the Kosmas family filed an injunction halting the execution, which will go on trial in Volos on Wednesday the 16th of October, but apparently the Monastery of Great Lavra on Mount Athos hurried to give a solution on Tuesday 15th.
