Desperate Greek Father Robs Bank To Pay Off Debt

Greek Father Robs Bank to Pay Off Loan At Another One

An unprecedented story of true desperation and human drama unfolded in Ioannina. A man robbed a bank in order to pay his debt to a company via another bank.

A 45 -year-old man, and father of two children, entered a General Bank branch with a knife in his trembling hand, and demanded the deposits. Without threatening anyone, he grabbed the money (11,140 euro) and got out of the bank undisturbed. Then he visited another bank in which he deposited most of the money he had robbed earlier in a company account.
Charged with emotion and feeling guilty for his actions he rushed to see his wife who works at a bakery. The bakery is situated within 150 meters of the nearby police department.
After a few hours, officers of Ioannina police department arrested the 45-year-old man. The man was an amateur thief, and entered the bank with his face uncovered. He only remembered to cover his face under a hood when approaching the bank cashier. It was only a matter of time before police arrested him.
The culprit’s name is D. Megas, a next-door father without previous convictions and a clean criminal record. He, like millions of Greek citizens during this period face huge financial strains. He owned a cell phone store, but because of the crisis, was forced to shut down his business. He did not give up however; he tried to find a new job in order to make ends meet, and secured a position in a store with infant clothing. His wife works in a bakery shop but the problems that the family was facing grew bigger and bigger. This is a situation that majority of Greek families have to struggle with because of the austerity imposed by the memorandum the country has signed with its international lenders. The official police announcement says that the 45-year-old man confessed to the robbery.
