Greek Couple Arrested for Buying Baby

550_334_190484The Greek police arrested a couple suspected of having purchased an 8-month-old Roma girl and trying to register her as their own child. The couple, a 53-year-old man and his 48-year-old wife, were arrested in Ano Liosia.

According to an announcement made by the police, in May, the Greek couple, bought the little girl from a Roma camp in Zefyri, for 4,000 euros.

Immediately after receiving the girl, the  48-year old resident, tried unsuccessfully, to register the baby to the Filis municipality, claiming the child as her own. Since then, the infant remained with them while they were trying to find a way to “legalize” the baby. The couple claimed that they proceeded with the illegal transaction because they were childless.
After an oral order of the Prosecutor, the little girl was taken to Children’s Hospital for tests.
The couple was arrested and led to the Public Prosecutors Office in Athens. Greek authorities continue the investigations to identify and arrest the biological mother of the baby and the other persons involved in the transaction.
During the last days many similar cases are being revealed. On Wednesday, another Roma couple was arrested in Lesvos, for the abduction of a boy. The couple told the authorities that they were childless and a Roma woman, who had five children, took pity on them and gave them the baby.
