Grieving the Loss of Giorgos Fountoulis and Manos Kapelonis

imerisia_LARGE_t_1061_43634066Today, the funerals of the two young men that were murdered on Friday November 1st outside the Golden Dawn offices in Neo Irakleio, were held.
As fate would have it 70 years ago, in 1943, a relative of Manos Kapelonis–Michalis Kapelonis–was executed in Crete by the Nazis for being in a restricted Nazi area.
In an atmosphere filled with grief and sorrow, friends and family said their final goodbyes to Manos Kapelonis this morning, at the church of Ypapanti in Artemida. The police discreetly followed the funeral march to the cemetery.
Giorgos Fountoulis was buried, this evening, at the church of Saint George in Palaio Irakleio. Hundreds of friends, family and citizens followed the young man to his final resting place. The parents and sister of the victim were inconsolable. The police also attended this funeral discreetly.
Following the family’s wishes there was no media coverage of the funeral. In a post on Facebook on Sunday, the victim’s father wrote:
“On Monday 4-11-2013 we will say our final goodbyes to our beloved child, Giorgos Fountoulis at the church of Saint George in Palaio Irakleio, at 15:00. His parents wish that his friends come to the funeral not as Golden Dawn members but as friends who want to honor their friend. We do not want BLOOD, our child’s blood has painted the road red, neither do we want HONOR; we know our own child’s honor and integrity. We do not wish for any politician to be present at the funeral, no matter what party they may represent. We do not wish for flowers and wreaths, instead we wish that the money that would have been spent on flowers is placed in a small box at the entrance of the church, so that we can make a donation to the SIKIARIDEIO FOUNDATION, where Giorgos’ beloved sister Irene is studying.”
