Nafplio will claim the title of European Capital of Culture for the year 2021. This was Mayor of Nafplio–Dimitris Kostouros’–proposition, which was approved by the city’s council.
Nafplio, for the second time in the city’s history, is putting forth its best efforts to claim the title of European Capital of Culture for 2021. “Nafplio has a lot of advantages and therefore would be the most suitable choice as a European capital of culture. The city’s historical background, its prehistoric past that is related with Byzantine Empire, the fact that Nafplio was the first capital of Greece along with the city’s architecture and infrastructure, allow us to believe that our city is a major contender for the title of the European capital of Culture in 2021,” the city’s mayor says.
Mr. Kostouros also stated, “now is the right time for Europe to support Nafplio’s nomination, in this way honoring Ioannis Kapodistrias’ city.”
Mr Kostouros made a special mention to those who believe that now is not the time for such long-term initiatives. “I am very well aware of the problems that everyone deals with every day because our country is having a difficult time. Setting short or long–term plans for our City’s promotion and development, could only benefit us and boost our local society in many ways. Of course it is not something easy. We must make bold decisions that will drive our city forward.”
Last but not least, Nafplio’s mayor called the municipal authorities of Argos and Epidaurus to support the city’s nomination for the European Capital of Culture for the year 2021.
