No Solution On Horizon for Greek Universities

on strikeAfter the court’s decision which was announced on Wednesday–that the strike of administrative employees of Greek universities is illegal but not abusive–the Public Prosecutor of Athens, P.Fakou, ordered a new investigation towards the strike’s legitimacy.  This time the administrative employees, by continuing the strike, are facing charges of acting against the court’s decision.
The university’s community is monitoring the situation with bated breath. In fact the representatives of the administrative staff have made it crystal clear in all directions, that no matter how many times the Greek Ministry of Education appeals against their strikes, they will continue their struggle.
The next day’s scenarios consists of 4 options discussed widely the last few hours, concerning the luck of the Greek universities and Technical Institutions.
First of all, many university buildings have been occupied by students, as a gesture of showing their solidarity to the administrative staff’s struggle. However, there are students who are opposed to the buildings’ occupation.
The intervention of Court authorities is another scenario that was discussed. The court has already decided twice that the strike is illegal. In this case the tension at the Institutions’ interior may be unavoidable, which is why this possibility is a headache for everyone involved.
Another possibility is the civil conscription of the administrative staff by the Ministry of Education. The Ministry strongly denies such a measure, as it is believed that it will damage the government’s image.
Last but not least, another possible scenario is the continuing of the administrative staff strikes, even after December 1st. This will have a negative impact on the students and will certainly lead to the loss of their semester.
Meanwhile the Greek Minister of Education, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, addresses a request to the administrative employees to open the universities as it is also a demand of the Greek society.
The Education Minister has called the rector authorities of the institutions to discuss on Friday in order to assist in the process of the administrative restructuring that must be followed.
Administrative staff will decide their next moves at their meeting that will take place tomorrow.
