Greek Court Finds Psomiadis Guilty of Match-Fixing

psomiadesMakis Psomiades was convicted to four and a half years imprisonment for attempted blackmail and bribery by a Greek court. The 58-year-old businessman and former Chairman of Kavala soccer club was cleared of the more serious charges of leading a criminal organization.
Psomiadis has been in custody for two years and can be set free if he pays the fine of 35,000 euros. The charges of match-fixing relate to the period in which he was the Chairman of the Kavala football team that was expelled from the professional league two years ago.
As he exited the court chambers, Psomiades stated,  “I am pleased with court’s decision. I am innocent and had nothing to do with these accusations. I strongly believe that my penalty will be reduced by the appeal court.” He also expressed satisfaction that his son, Stavros Psomiadis, was proven innocent by the Court.
Also convicted of match fixing along with Psomiades, were Thomas Mitropoulos, Constantinos Riavoglou, Dionisis Kotoulas and Periklis Amanatidis.
