Davutoglu in Athens to Discuss the Cypriot Dispute

davutogluOn December 13, the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Davutoglu will be in Athens to discuss the Greek EU presidency and the Cypriot dispute.
Athens would like to keep a low profile, however Turkey has decided to take a more proactive approach as it fears that Greece is uncommitted to the four-way “cross meetings”  between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish representatives, and Turkish-Cypriot with Greek negotiators. However, the Greek government still denies that it is hesitant and has already refused to take part in the meeting.
The Turkish Minister will also take part in open talks about their European perspective, such as on essential rights. The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Evangelos Venizelos, during his last trip to Turkey, announced that the two countries will create a Supreme Cooperation Council in the first months of the Greek Presidency. Although it seems there are clear differences in opinion among Greek ministers as to the true value of such a council.
In diplomatic circles there is support for the next round of talks on the Cypriot dispute to begin. This is made clear by the visit to Washington D.C by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ General Secretary and the Greek Ambassador Antonis Mitsialis, who is the negotiator with the Turkish-Cypriot side, in order to discuss developments with the U.S. State Department and National Security Council.
The truth is that the Greek government would like to ensure positive result from this visit. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has suggested that “only the USA is able to convince Turkey to adopt a more constructive and conciliatory stance.”
