Economic Recession Hits the Greek Military

 ARVYLO_SIMAIA

As much as we all want to think of Christmas Holidays as a very cheerful time of year, this is not something that jives with reality.
In Greece, where the economic crisis has been going on for some years now, many people find it hard to make ends meet and for that reason, they cannot enjoy these special days. Some of these people are the soldiers of the military who are serving duty far from their homes.
The soldiers’ families cannot even afford to pay for tickets so that the soldiers can travel back home and spend some time with their relatives during the holidays. In that case, soldiers do not ask for a leave and they prefer to stay at their military camps over the holidays.
It is a really rare possibility that a soldier will know in advance when his leave is scheduled, so that he will be able to book his flight early and have the advantage of a cheaper ticket. Even so, this so-called “cheap ticket” is not affordable for most Greek soldiers. Any flight to Athens from a city or island, where a military camp exists, costs no less than 150 euros. If we take into consideration that this price is for a one-way ticket, then the total cost will exceed 300 euros. It is certainly a price that the majority of the Greek soldiers cannot afford to pay.
Even if the soldiers chose to travel using an alternative means of transport –bus or train- assuming of course that it is possible to do so, the ticket is not as cheap as it was a few years back.
