Piraeus Bans Golden Dawn Food Handouts

mayor of PiraeusThe Mayor of Piraeus, Vasilis Michaloliakos has banned Golden Dawn’s food distribution “for Greeks only”, which was due to take place on Saturday at 11 in the morning outside the new Municipal Theater.
Michaloliakos sent a letter to the Chief of Police in Piraeus, informing him of the situation. “Some are planning to take advantage of human suffering and I would like to inform you that nobody has asked for the municipality’s permission to use the area.” He clarified  that the municipality of Piraeus would never subject its citizens to such a shameful event.
The Mayor requested that police authorities take all necessary measures to discourage any political parties, NGOs, factions and bodies from using public space, especially the Municipal Theater square, for events which aim to humiliate certain groups and to exploit the suffering of people.
The prefectural committee of SYRIZA in an official statement, said that “the members of the criminal organisation Golden Dawn will hide for a while, their guns and swastika symbols under the guise of charity.”
Golden Dawn has organised many such food distribution stunts before and has attracted widespread condemnation for its racist policies. In May 2013, the Mayor of Athens George Kaminis, banned a soup kitchen organized by Golden Dawn, although its members ignored the ban. Kaminis referred to the scheme as the “soup kitchen of hatred,” because only people able to prove their nationality by showing a Greek identity card could receive food. It was “arbitrary, racist and illegal,” he stated.
