Another 4,000 Suspensions in Greek Public Sector

Another 4,000 public servants must be suspended by the Greek government by January 15 when Troika officials are expected to return to Athens, as dictated by the terms of the bailout for 2013.
The coalition government must suspend a further 3,000 by the end of March. Those who work in the Greek Defense Industry along with other State-owned organizations should be considered as the first “victims” of the government’s suspension scheme. The numbers in those organizations are small, all with less than 80 employees. The only exception is the Road Fund (TEO) in which there are more than 100 employees.
The government estimates that the shut-down of twelve organizations will be enough to achieve the necessary number of suspensions. In addition, government officials favor the privatization of public cleaning and security services.
According to the government, any vacancies that arise will be covered by public servants already on the availability scheme from last June.
