Greek Police Uncover Theft Ring Targeting the Elderly

police-fake-weddingsThe Greek police have arrested a 26-year-old woman and are looking for another 15 individuals on charges of participating in a ring that deceived elderly people into handing over money. According to a Greek police investigation, the ring was established in 2010 and has been active in several regions across the country.
Its members approached elderly people, earning their trust by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their children or relatives. They then managed to convince them to hand over significant amounts of money. The Greek police have identified 44 similar cases which may be related to the ring’s activities, which it is estimated earned them around 138,000 euros. It is also believed that many of the alleged ring members have family connections.
The arrested woman has appeared before the prosecutor, while personal information including names, ages and photographs of 14 of the other alleged ring members have been publicized by the police, in order to determine the extent of their activities and if members are involved in other crimes.
