The Greek Counter-Terrorism Unit is examining the possibility that an organized network of old and new guerrillas is behind the disappearance of Greek terrorist Christodoulos Xeros on Tuesday.
During the last months a strange partnership between terrorists of the old generation and new urban guerrillas has formed, note Greek police analysts. Convicted criminals are assumed to also be playing a key role in this deal.
It is feared that new terrorist groups are looking for a person who can act as a symbol and facilitate the active return of terrorism to the Greek scene, in this way providing some type of continuity and development to Greek “traditional” terrorist organizations, such as November 17 and Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire.
“Xeros is not just anybody, he has extensive knowledge on terror attacks and explosives,” stated the journalist Yannis Pretenderis. Now he seems to be trying to pass this knowledge on to a new generation of young guerrillas.
“Christodoulos Xeros, a 56-year-old having spent 12 years in prison, in combination with being inactive for 23 years, will not grab a Kalashnikov or RPG and return to action. His release is purely symbolic, and if combined with the attack on the residence of the German Ambassador to Greece, it is a clear message that domestic terrorist groups have returned to the Greek scene,” states an official of the Hellenic Police. “The longer it takes for him to show up, the scenario that he is up to something becomes more likely.”
An important factor in Xeros’ changing attitude materialized after his transfer from the special prison wing for members of November 17, to another wing, where he made friends with a known criminal. He also came in contact with jailed members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire, who in an Internet statement expressed solidarity with Xeros and declared that “the time to attack has come.”
