New Yorker: Photos of a Declining Greece

The US magazine NEW YORKER is featuring a photographic series about the economic crisis in Greece, seen from the perspective of a Greek who has just moved back to Greece after 11 years abroad.

In the article entitled “In Waiting: The Greek Economic Crisis in Pictures,” photographer Eirini Vourloumis moves away from documenting riots, poverty and people standing in line for a bag of onions and potatoes and rediscovers the stripped aesthetics of everyday Athens. “This work is an examination of Athens and its role as a physical stage for the economic crisis,” mentioned the photographer to the magazine.

  The series features interior pictures of governmental buildings, institutions, schools and hospitals to showcase how these spaces reflect modern Greek culture and character. “Spaces, which once seemed banal or unimportant, now reveal nuances of Greek reality and have social and political implications,” she said. “Like the Greek people, these places exist in anticipation of their future.”

Eirini Vourloumis was born in Athens, Greece. She graduated from Parsons School of Design and from Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York.

She works as a freelance photographer, focusing on feature and reportage stories based on the ongoing economic crisis. She worked for two years as a contributing photographer for the New York Times Metro section and is currently freelancing for the New York Times and other publications in Greece.
Her work has been published in the New York Times, New York Magazine, Time, Le Monde Magazine, The Financial Times Magazine, The Daily Independent, Village Voice, “K” magazine of Kathimerini Newspaper and Athens News, among others.
