School Chemical Contamination, Three Teachers Hospitalized

An incident occurred earlier today at the vocational lyceum (EPAL) school in the city of Arta in Epirus, Greece, when local authorities were alerted to the presence of an unknown airborne chemical substance.
Three teachers from the school were hospitalized with breathing difficulties. The Arta fire department was unable to enter the school and decided to evacuate the premises as a precautionary measure.
The local Directorate of Secondary Education, the Municipality and the Regional Unit were immediately informed of the incident. The local Greek Police have launched an investigation and it is hoped that the suspects who are still at large, will soon be arrested.
Local newspapers report that the chemical used was probably creolin, a highly toxic substance with a distinctive odor, used in the past to disinfect animal stalls. Its removal requires special procedures. It is believed that the chemicals were placed in the school during the holidays.
This type of “prank” is not unprecedented, with similar incidents in the neighboring city of Amfiloxia in November 2012 and December 2013, when unknown suspects placed mothballs in schools. In another incident 2 years ago, the fumes generated when naphthalene, the main ingredient in mothballs was mixed with water, led to the hospitalization of 14 students.
