Greece 5th in EU in PDO Products

PDO productsGreece aims to launch 101 products with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) to foreign markets. Some which were not previously more widely available abroad, include Kasseri cheese, Gruyere cheese of Naxos, the Cretan Rusk, Apples of Zagora, the Avgotaraho of Missolonghi and Prespa Beans.
The decision was announced yesterday, during a special event in the presence of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Cioloş and the Commissioner of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki. Greece will be in 5th place in the EU (7th last year) in terms of the numbers of PDO products, after Italy (261 products), France (208), Spain (173) and Portugal (123).
There are also pending applications regarding four more Greek products, Stafida Soultanina Kritis, Galano Metaggitsiou Chalkidikis olive oil, Sitia Kritis olive oil and Fasolia Gigantes-Elefantes of Kastoria. If all goes to plan, in a few months Greece will have 105 PDO products.
The Greek Minister for Rural Development and Food, Athanasios Tsaftaris has promised that during the Greek Presidency he will promote more Greek traditional products from the islands and villages, as well as organic products, in order to receive official characterization from the EU.
“Of the 101 Greek PDO products, 30 are olive oil, 20 are cheeses, while 29 are fruits, vegetables and nuts,” said Tsaftaris.
The Hellenic Post (ELTA) has recently decided to issue a series of stamps depicting all Greek PDO products.
