Greek-Albanian Border Municipalities Ask for More Security

Six municipalities along the Greek-Albanian border in the north-west of Greece have requested a meeting with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the Ministers of Public Order & Citizen Protection, Nikos Dendias and National Defense, Dimitris Avramopoulos, in order to discuss the issue of increasing criminality along the border.
The mayors of the Greek municipalities of Filiata, Pogoni, Konitsa, Nestorio, Kastoria and Prespes have all signed a letter sent this morning to the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the two ministers and the leaders of the political parties, as well as to the MP’s and Regional Governors of Epirus and Western Macedonia. In the letter they state, “we will proceed in making public our issues and intensify the pressure on central government, as we are only asking for basic safety and security, a right every citizen should enjoy. We are no longer able to defend our lives and properties; we are just waiting for a new attack and just hoping to survive.”
The letter goes on to explain how security along the Greek-Albanian border is ineffective, allowing criminals to enter Greece and terrorize residents in the north of the country. They explain that while the municipalities have taken initiatives to address the problems, they need State support in order for these initiatives to become effective.
The mayors are calling for a return of the previous system of border guards, while reinforcing local police departments with additional staff and equipment. Furthermore, they call for the reopening the military outposts along the border and the relocation of some Frontex officers, the EU’s border management agency, from the eastern to the western Greek borders.
