Highway patrol plus drivers, equals tickets being issued most of the time. Drivers violating the law are faced with fines issued by highway patrol officers. This was also the case in Cyprus, at least until yesterday.
On Thursday, the highway patrol of the Cypriot city of Nicosia set up a surprise for drivers. By setting up a roadblock at a central spot in Nicosia, the police officers stopped various drivers who were both violating the law or not and showed them a video about the importance of wearing seat belts while being on the road.
The action was held as part of a two-week inspection campaign for the use of seat belts by drivers and passengers. The officers of the Nicosia highway patrol under the coordination of police officer Charis Evripidou, were parked on Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue in the Cypriot Municipality of Agios Dometios and held the driver’s education campaign.
During the campaign, the drivers were shown several videos relating to the use of seat belts, which were intended to raise awareness and sensitizing drivers on this serious problem.
The videos depicted the consequences of driving without wearing seat belts. From the response of the drivers and their passengers, it seemed that they understood the role of seat belts in preventing serious or fatal injuries.
In Cyprus, not wearing a seat belt is along with excess alcohol consumption and speeding, one of the leading causes of road deaths. The Cypriot highway patrol stated that it will continue its campaign in raising awareness among drivers, as the initiative seems to be really appreciated by people.
