Despite that the competent Greek Ministers anticipated the suspension of thousands of unfaithful civil servants, the General Inspector of Public Administration, Leandros Rakintzis, speaking on the Special Permanent Committee on Institutions and Transparency of the Greek Parliament, dismissed this scenario. He also doubted that there are 7,000 unfaithful civil servants and said that the Ministers were falsely informed as this number is outrageous. He explained that there is only a list with 2,500 names of public servants sent by the judicial authorities. These names should be examined thoroughly to find out who the unfaithful ones are, which means not all of them must be suspended.
Eventually, only 200 of them were suspended. However, there are another 500 cases of civil servants that the Council of State has not yet made a decision on whether they should be suspended or not, said Mr. Rakintzis.
Regarding the cases of the civil servants that have used false documents and certificates in order to be hired, Mr. Rakintzis said that “we do not have many such cases. Only a small number of civil servants with false high-school diplomas were found in the municipal police services. They were all suspended.”
However, Mr. Rakintzis underlined that the authorities found many cases of civil servants that have used forgeries of official language certificates in order to get a promotion.
